Preventing
Genital Herpes
Abstinence
is the only sure way to prevent genital herpes from infecting
you. However, if you do decide to have sexual contact with
another person there are several thing you might consider.
Be involved in a mutually monogamous sexual relationship.
Be open and honest with your partner. Communicate with your
partner about sex, previous experiences, and STDs. If you
are or have been infected with any STD tell your partner about
it. Also, ask him or her to be honest with you.
The
consistent and correct use of latex condoms can help protect
against infection. However, condoms do not provide complete
protection because the condom may not cover the total area
affected by the herpes sore(s). If either you or your partner
have genital herpes, it is best to abstain from sex when symptoms
or signs are present, and to use latex condoms between outbreaks.
Also
during oral sex, it is recommended to use a latex barrier.
You may use a latex oral sex latex barrier. You can also cut
a condom lengthwise and use it as a barrier during oral sex.
This might prevent you from acquiring the herpes. However,
remember that if affected areas are not covered by the barrier
you could still get herpes.
